Can anyone tell me why was Berlin wall made?

I added a link to the article of mine with the historic time line of the events related and surrounding the Berlin Wall. But the short answer to your question is: East Germany was “bleeding out”. Mostly the young and skilled people used the open border between East Berlin and West Berlin to flee to the west. The Border between East Germany and West Germany was already shut. That had catastrophic consequences for the East German economy. Ulbricht had to stop that.

The Berlin Wall was built by the eastern powers, the Communists mostly from USSR. There reasoning was that they were trying to avoid invansion from the Allied powers from the West. Which was total crap. if you see pictures of the wall all of the land mines and holes were from the east to the west not west to east. Which means that they were trying to stop eastners to go west. They knew the the west had more oppurtunies for the people. Their economy was failing. So up the wall went

Because the communist regime felt it was necessary to ‘protect’ their people against the West. And to stop the massive exodus from people to the West. Simply said ofcourse.

When the wall fell, all the world knew that planned economies could never bring as much health, wealth and happiness to the people as market economies could.

Soon, even communist China started to implement free market reforms. The result is the fastest improvement of standards of living in China in centuries.

Markets work. Competition and capitalism is better for the poor. Central planning, and govt ownership of business fails.

This lesson needs to be retold to each generation.

  7. freesk8 sagt:

It was made to prevent workers from leaving East Berlin, where the implementation of govt ownership of the means of production (i.e. socialism) was creating poverty and despair. East Germany was given to the Soviets at the end of WW2 since they reached Berlin at about the same time as the US and British forces. The Soviets put in a puppet govt and implemented socialism. This made conditions terrible. It made E Berlin in to a sort of forced work camp. Most people wanted to leave.

The lessons of the Berlin wall have been totally lost. Obama fills his administration with Marxist and the Americans and Europeans don’t see any problem. It’s breath taking.

  10. yahazif sagt:

The Berlin wall was built to stop people from escaping Communist rule. The Left always comes to power claiming that they want to help the poor. Once in power they become murderous and treat people like slaves. Russia, China, Romania, Cambodia etc.. When East Germany fell to the communist in 1945 people tried to escape. The Communist built the Berlin wall to keep people under their control.

U wanna know why Europeans don’t see any problem with Obama?

    a) Their current governments are way more “socialist” (and corrupt for that matter) than Obama could ever dream about.
I guess most european governments are as far left of the “optimum” as the US government is to the right of the “optimum”. (in terms of economic policy)

    b) Many europeans have actually experienced real socialism and understand that Obama is not in the least a socialist.

Folks, let’s not forget that the wall was built with the full knowledge and, at least implicit, consent of the US. Soviets & Americans had a brief stand-off at Checkpoint Charlie but stood down when unhindered access by US forces to E Germany was granted by the Russians. Whether or not E & W Germans had any access was of little interest to the US, despite JFK’s tear-jerking performance in ‘63 in W Berlin. Germans were left to overcome the wall by themselves and eventually did.

Yes, what about the wall in Israel and the Refuge camps in Palestina? Why do we ignore this so many years aready …

  17. NorceCodine sagt:

Except not to forget that it was not Russians who pulled the trigger at the wall for 30 years, the murderers all spoke German. The sad truth is that Germans had no qualm shooting other Germans. Do not be fooled by all this “communism vs. freedom” white-washing of the real truth – bullets have no ideology.
Europe’s catastrophy always was, and is Germany, and it will always be a ticking time bomb. Use your head, propaganda has many faces and it loves emotions.

I think the Berlin Wall is a testament to what happens when you build a wall and face the guns the wrong way. It ends up getting destroyed in less then 30 years.
