Entry from: Berlin, Germany Entry Title: “Haunting History” Entry: “I am now in Berlin and the sun did come out the minute I got here. No problems on the train and this city has been untouched by the flooding except that they are overrun with people trying to escape the floods. The hostel I checked into is called the Circus and its pretty innovative. Everything, and I mean everything, was Ikea and they used cardkeys for the rooms. It was definitely the most modern hostel I have been in thus far. Not to mention the staff who were helpful and polite, more or less. Berlin has been really interesting so far. I saw what was left of the Wall (more than I thought would be left) and visited Topography of Terror exhibit (free outdoor block long gallery). It was chilling to realize that this happened so recently as I pondered the black and white photos. Berlin is a city of constant change…there is so much construction going on here including a site on which they are building the Memorial to Murdered Jews of Europe near the Reichstag. I was suprised to see that the site of Hitlers’ bunker was just a patch of grass in the middle of a carpark of an apartment building. They have tried not to sensationalize it and during the walking tour I took the guide indicated the spot where Hitlers body was burned by

Entry from: Berlin, Germany Entry Title: “History Filled Berlin” Entry: “Berlin is another one of those budget-traveller’s paradises. Much to our surprise, it was really easy to stay on budget while we were there. The area of town we stayed in was a bit shady, however the prices were fantastic. There was an Italian restaurant right next to our hostel with great plates of pasta, or nice pizzas for only about €2.50! We ended up discovering that the neighbourhood we were staying in was in the former East Berlin which probably accounted for the low prices. We started off our stay in Berlin with an 8 hour walking tour of town, put on by Brewer’s Berlin Tours www.brewersberlintours.com For only €12 each, we had a very informative, entertaining and extremely extensive walking tour of East and West Berlin. We learned all about the history of the Berlin wall and life behind the Iron Curtain. The wall was actually built entirely on East German territory, completely surrounding West Berlin. It was built to prevent Easterners escaping to the West. It’s weird to think that the West Berliners were the ones fenced in, but it was the Easterners that were the prisoners. I really can’t say enough about how great the tour was, and we certainly recommend it to anyone visiting Berlin. One thing our tour guide told us

Entry from: Berlin, Germany Entry Title: “City of modern history” Entry: “Berlin has so much history, and most of it with a sad background. Our first stop was the Bradenburg Gate. It was finished in 1791 and was a city gate. Later it was used as one of the border crossings between the east and west. Interestingly the statue on top was stolen by Napoleon and eventually returned. It also use to face east, but was turned after the wall was torn down. We then continued on to the Reichstag, a building made famous by Hitler. The line was pretty long to go inside and walk in the “new” glass dome so we passed. The park in front had fences and cables all set up and we believe the day before they had celebrations for 20yrs since the wall had come down. Nearby is the holocaust memorial. There’s 2711 stelae (differently shaped concrete columns) one for each page of the Talmud. The slopping grounds and unevenness is apparently to represent an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, and a supposedly ordered system that has lost touch with human reason. We continued on and found parts of the original wall, no longer actually in their original spot. Berlin is currently undergoing a project that a cobblestone strip is being put in where the wall stood. A bit more walking and we made it to the museum of terrors. Warning you

Entry from: Berlin, Germany Entry Title: “Berlin, History, Heat and Huge Beer mugs” Entry: “What an amzing place! Went for a walk when we arrived to the Reichstag, massive intimidating building. Saw many building that had been destroyed in the war, mostly rebuild this place was ripped apart. Went to the Holocost Memorial, very surreal place. Next day did a walking tour and saw heaps of stuff. Saw many war memorials, checked out Checkpoint Charlie the main access point through the Berlin Wall. Saw many of the part of the wall still standing, mostly covered in cool graffiti, even saw and untouched part with death strip razor wire and guard towers. Checked out the Brendenberg Gate, got my photo taken with a storm trooper, and saw the hotel where Micheal Jackson dangled the baby from the balcony. Was so hot I got pretty sunburnt. Had dinner at a German beer garden, had sauerkraut and Bratwurst andmy first Stien. German beer tast amazing, even had Banana beer, tasted suprisingly good. DId a quick tour of West Berlin, and learnt how they tried to escape through the wall and how they delivered secret messages. Then went to a cool alleyway bar where we smoked shisha and drank beer before heading to a cool alternative bar in the centre of Berlin. I must say I like the feel of this place, so much amazing
