Berliner Unterwelten
Donnerstag, 22. Juli 2010On 16 Juli 2008 together with my family we made Tour 1 Dunkle Welten which started at U-bahn station Gesundbrunnen. We went deep underground in a bunkersystem of World War Two. The word ‘Toilet’ was not used since this was the language of the enemy (England and France). Therefore the word ‘Abort’ was painted on the wall to give the direction for men and women. It was dark and claustrofobic under the ground. While the guide gave an explenation we sat in that dark and narrow bunker. While Berlin was bombed you were sitting in the bunker underground with a limit of oxygen. I could feel a little of the atmosphere. After the war all Berlin bunkers were blown up but this bunker was a part of the underground system and therefore not destroyed.
Berlin- Last Battle
Montag, 26. April 2010Final Battle of Berlin. Starting on 16 January 1945, the Red Army breached the German front as a result of the VistulaOder Offensive and rapidly advanced westward as fast as 3040 kilometres a day, through East Prussia, Lower Silesia, East Pomerania, and Upper Silesia, temporarily halting on a line 60 kilometres east of Berlin along the Oder River. During the offensive, two Soviet fronts (army groups) attacked Berlin from the east and south, while a third overran German forces positioned north of Berlin. The Battle in Berlin lasted from late 20 April 1945 until the morning of 2 May and was one of the bloodiest battles in history.
