July 7, 1980 is a historic date in music history. Jimmy Page, smokes a joint and embellishes the longest Stairway To Heaven solo in the band’s history. This clip highlights his work that day, albeit sloppy playing (you’d be too if you were in his condition). Nevertheless, he is forgiven because he has given all of us the pleasure to listen to his ailing gift. It was momentous, it was historic, it was…THE LAST.

@vettezeppelin He was a very good guitarist, and for many people he’s the best they’ve heard, or will ever hear. But all I’m saying is that….Man! Zappa just ripped it every single show, solos that Page could only play in his dreams. Most people just don’t know much music, or much about music, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but i’ll tell you, Frank never came out and gave a bad performance like this, not even close, in fact it’s the opposite.
@vettezeppelin Zappa was just consistently awesome, from the late ’60s until his death, he was a few steps above all other rock music of his time. On the other hand, Metal is a whole different genre with many more technically “skilled” guitarists, and Jazz/Fusion is where you’ll find the best of them all. Jimmy Page was taught guitar by John McLaughlin, and to say that he ever came anywhere close to McLaughlin is an atrocity.

@kogolz Heyyy, it’s cool, just making a factual point here. I’m not much of a Zeppelin fan (who needs Zeppelin when you’ve got Zappa!), but I watched this video when somebody posted it on facebook and upon reading some of the comments, I couldn’t believe how many people were praising Jimmy Page for one of the worst live solos I’ve ever heard. I’m just saying, if I we to judge just by this video, I, and numerous friends of mine, are WAY better guitarists than Jimmy Page. Zeppelin is pop-rock.
If I had been one of the band members that day I would have broken down in tears. However, they kept pushing on & played it through. I often wonder if anyone one of them ever told Jim just how badly the music was suffering due to drugs & drink. I wonder why as great a guitar player Jim was that he didnt care enough for their music. His playing was right on before The Hard Stuff. Dont do drugs!

@ShaemusTOFinnigan YOU totally get it about Pages playing here. I have always liked the fact the Page isn’t perfect. He doesn’t play the solo over and over again to get something polished to an inch of it’s life. Page clearly isn’t at his best here yet there is still something brilliant going on…its like he is trying to get something out of the guitar that never came before…it’s not perfect but certainly unique and tragically brilliant. I understand if others don’t get it..but I love it
@GDarkstar74 This solo is awful. But I have to disagree. I have listened to a lot of Zappa and he IS a great guitarist. But, he was not as good as Page. This is not representative of Page’s best work. Shame on him for being so high as to ruin a concert. But I have heard some lame Zappa performances too.
idk why ppl critize jimmy page he sounds great but is awesome that jonh bonham was there to back him up with amazing drumming besides they saw themselves as a band not as individuals thats why they disbanded when bonzo died b/c it wouldnt have been right. LONG LIVE ROCK AND LONG LIVE LED ZEPPELIN
Page is my absolute favorite. He sounds way blitzed here. lol Still like it though. After all, it was the last… Check out other shows from 1980 if you think they were “bad” in 1980. They were great in ‘80 99% of the time. Listen to previous STH solos too. Some guy uploaded a series of videos of 1980 STH solos.
@Silverwolf90 He wasn’t a terrible live musician. I saw him in 1998 when you were 8 and he played great! There is a lot of live Led Zeppelin material on YouTube. Some of it easy to find. Some of it hard to find. Page might have had bad days and sometimes does but ultimately, he played/plays great most of the time live. Now this performance of the STH solo, definitely not his best. Drugs and booze are an excuse to play badly too. Get fucking blitzed and try to improvise a solo.

Don’t try to project your own problems and insecurities onto others, maybe you suck at guitar, but that’s no reason to make insults and false claims over an awful guitar solo. You are ridiculous. I didn’t look up jimmy page, and I wouldn’t after hearing this shit, Frank Zappa is immeasurably better than this.
