For 28 years, the 28 mile Berlin Wall had split a city in two and divided a nation with two million tons of concrete, 700000 tonnes of steel, attack dogs, tank traps, death strips and tripwires. While its dangers kept most GDR citizens at bay, others were spurred on to overcome it, by digging under it, hiding in car trunks, flying over it in hot-air balloons, and even surfing around it. To mark the twentieth anniversary of the Wall’s historic demise, The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall charts its epic history and vividly brings to life the most daring escapes and interviews former border guards, politicians, spies and escapees.

My daughter put together this video for her World History class project. It is very informative to only be 6 minutes long. She did an outstanding job with it. The 4 students standing in front of a section of the Berlin Wall at 5:43 is my daughter and her friends. They got the opportunity to see it on a trip to Washington DC.

The Battle of Berlin, designated the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation by the Soviet Union, was the final major offensive of the European Theatre of World War II. Starting on 16 April 1945, the Red Army breached the German front as a result of the Vistula–Oder Offensive and advanced westward as much as 40 kilometres a day through East Prussia, Lower Silesia, East Pomerania, and Upper Silesia, temporarily halting on a line 60 kilometres east of Berlin along the Oder River. When the offensive resumed, two Soviet army groups attacked Berlin from the east and south, while a third overran German forces positioned north of Berlin. The Battle in Berlin lasted from 20 April 1945 until the morning of 2 May. Before the battle was over, German Führer Adolf Hitler and a number of his followers committed suicide. The city’s defenders finally surrendered on 2 May. However, fighting continued to the north-west, west and south-west of the city until the end of the war in Europe on 8 May as German units fought westward so that they could surrender to the Western Allies rather than to the Soviets. Shot on location, The Big Lift is a reenactment of the Berlin Airlift of 1948. After the Russians decide to blockade West Berlin and no supplies can reach the area via land or water, the US Air Force and other allies steps in to bring food and fuel to the inhabitants via air in spite of dangerous flying conditions. The film follows the adventures of a C-54 flight engineer (Montgomery Clift) and an air traffic controller (Paul Douglas) as they participate in the effort.
