Chess Traps #5: Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence Trap (Fishing Pole)

www.jrobichess.com http Visit my personal web site www.jrobichess.com for a variety of free chess resources and training materials. This video looks at a possible trapping line played by black in the Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence line. The trap offers up a free knight to the white player that has horrible consequences if taken. The video also explores possible lines to play if the bait is not taken. To see Life Master Brian Wall’s thoughts on the Fishing Pole Trap watch this video http

Nice trap, black is indeed in good position even if white doesn’t fall for it but has to be careful not to lose the track of whites efforts to secure defence

There is no escape from the Pole, my friend.

Hey jrobi thanks for sharing this, my favourite chess trap for sure. I tried it out in an online game just now and won in 17 moves :)

Hey what program do you use for this cool chess lesson? I wanna use it.

  15. theAwsomBeaverrr sagt:

@BrianWallChess sory for the mistake. my bad

  16. shadowdancerRFW sagt:

What if at 4:11 white plays knight to h2 ? black moves queen to h4, white rook to e1 and white will get out of the trap with no piece lost.

  17. cru3linside sagt:

    @shadowdancerRFW
    afterwards I would say Qxh2, K-f1, Qh1, Ke2, Qxg2 – still not looking good for white

or did I miss something there?

  18. shadowdancerRFW sagt:

@cru3linside i agree, it looks bad, but still better than being checkmate. i’m gonna compete in a chess tourny and i need all these traps ;) this one is awesome because many players play king’s pawn opening then castle, also many players would fall for the knight sacrifice ;)

  19. Rivafla sagt:

white cant stop all the threats and get a good game by ignoring the knight which move two times in the opening by playing c3 instead of Re1 or Nc3.

  20. shadowdancerRFW sagt:

if white moves pawn to d3 at any time before black knight to g4, the trap won’t work….

  21. parazitu10 sagt:

I’m sorry but some traps are a little irealistic !

I also just wanted to comment that I managed to beat Chess Titans, level 10, on the first try using this technique.

    Pure brilliance.
